Snack Sacs

Snack Sacs

The United Way of St. Mary's County is excited announce a new partnership with the Southern Maryland Food Bank. Our organizations will be working together on a project called "Snack Sacs".  This is a nutritioinal project to help fill the gap of hunger for children in Southern Maryland.  St. Mary's County United Way and The Southern Maryland Food Bank are committed to easing the pain of hunger in Southern Maryland.  The mission of the Sanck Sac Project is to fill the gap of hunger during the weekends, when other resources like free or reduced breakfast and lunch programs are not available.  We provide back packs filled with ready to eat, kid friendly, nutritious snacks in an unmarked back pack.  All back packs are descreetly distributed by school staff, to keep the identity of those being served private.  Back packs are delivered weekly to the school and handed out on the last day before a weekend or before a holiday.

With full or partial sponsorships, we will ease the pain of hunger and remove the fear of food insecurity!

Fourteenth Annual Day of Caring

What is Day of Caring™?

Day of Caring™ is a volunteer community service project held annually one day each fall in St. Mary’s County.  Employees from area businesses work side-by-side with United Way agency staff and volunteers, and often the very people their work supports.

When is Day of Caring™?

Most projects will take place on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2011.
A couple of additional projects, for the Special Olympics St. Mary’s County Soccer Tournament and the Farm Life Festival for Christmas in April, will take place on other days in October.

Why is Day of Caring™ important?

Day of Caring™ is an opportunity for the community to see where and how their donations are used locally, while providing much needed volunteer skills for local charities.

How can you become involved?

Volunteers with a wide variety of skills are needed.  Each year area businesses sponsor Day of Caring™ with cash donations, employee volunteers and in-kind gifts of project materials.  These sponsorships support the Day of Caring™, including helping to defray the costs of projects.  Contact United Way of St. Mary’s County directly at 301.862.5577 to sponsor/volunteer.

Where do projects take place?

Projects occur at sites throughout St. Mary’s County, primarily at the offices and facilities of the United Way of St. Mary’s County agencies.
